Poland Confirms US Alliance While Rejecting Subservient Role
His remarks followed Wednesday’s announcement that Warsaw would not take part in President Donald Trump’s Board of Peace initiative.
“Poland was, is, and will be a loyal, reliable, and predictable ally of the United States,” Tusk stated after a National Security Council session, as cited by a news agency.
The prime minister’s statement came shortly after he confirmed that Poland would abstain from joining the Board of Peace project.
“But in this alliance, Poland is not and will not be—as long as I am prime minister—a vassal. We will be a faithful ally, but we will not be a vassal in relations with any country in the world,” Tusk emphasized.
He further noted that partnerships between allied nations should not depend on “someone constantly nodding and trying to gain something through flattery.”
On Jan. 22, delegates from 19 nations endorsed the Charter of the Board of Peace during the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
The Board of Peace was formed as part of broader initiatives aimed at achieving a peaceful resolution in the Gaza Strip. US officials have indicated that more countries have joined the effort since its launch.
The inaugural meeting is set for Feb. 19 in Washington, DC, at the leaders’ level. It is still uncertain whether Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will be present. Securing financial support for Gaza’s reconstruction is anticipated to be the primary agenda item.
