Poland’s Military Police Investigate Mystery Drone Crash

(MENAFN) Poland's military police have opened an investigation into how an unidentified unmanned aerial vehicle plummeted inside a northeastern military installation, landing mere meters from a weapons storage facility, officials announced Monday.

The alarming breach took place on Jan. 28 at the 2nd Radio-electronic Center in Przasnysz, approximately 90 kilometers (56 miles) north of Warsaw. A radio station reported that a duty officer stationed at the base witnessed the drone hovering above the compound before it spiraled downward and crashed dangerously close to the munitions area.

Military personnel immediately secured the fallen UAV and transferred it to an indoor facility for forensic examination. The military police received notification and swiftly launched formal investigative protocols, including evidence preservation and witness interrogations, a spokesperson for the commander-in-chief of the military police confirmed.

The episode intensifies mounting anxiety throughout Poland and fellow NATO nations regarding unauthorized aerial intrusions near sensitive infrastructure and defense installations, especially amid Russia's ongoing invasion of Ukraine and the widespread availability of affordable UAV systems.

This crash represents the most recent entry in an escalating pattern of drone-related security breaches spanning Central and Eastern Europe. In Germany and the Baltic states, intelligence agencies have scrutinized numerous reports of mysterious drones appearing near military exercises, maritime ports and power infrastructure, fueling espionage fears and preparedness concerns.

Although no evidence currently suggests hostile intent behind the Przasnysz incident, authorities refuse to dismiss any possibility, including pilot miscalculation, mechanical failure or intentional surveillance operations.

Poland's Ministry of Defense has maintained public silence regarding the drone's origin, classification, or whether it carried surveillance equipment or additional cargo.
